Let me state my mission for the SomaSense blog and for massage up front:
I want to change the word.
No, no, not the world, I want to change the word!
Although I have an idea that changing this word might well change your world.
I am on a quest to find or think up a word that will fling this clumsy phrase, mind-body, on the compost heap of outdated theories.
And why do I want to change the word?
Because it is a pain!
And because if you suffer pain and discomfort as many of my clients do, this distinction between body and mind is not at all helpful in moving towards wellness and quality of life.
No matter how you arrange the words, body first or mind first, it always implies a power differential
It always puts one concept before the other, reinforcing the dualistic Cartesian worldview splitting us in two (or three if you add the soul).
And anyway, this oversimplification is not supported by research.
Also it relegates my profession as massage therapist to mere bodywork.
Separating that which we are into two halves makes it sound as if your body can come for a massage while at the same time, your mind is off to see a psychologist.
We need a word that celebrates oneness, wholeness, your embodied being-ness.
SomaSense combines my experience as a massage therapist, psychology student and forager for ways to foster wellness and well-being and particularly for people with chronic pain.
So even though I don’t have a term for the concept body-mind yet, I do have a few ideas for practical, common sense and self-empowering tools to:
But I am also eager to hear about your journey, your insights and ways of managing pain and discomfort.
So join me under the tree in my garden for a cup of rooibos tea and let’s talk SomaSense!
